Why it matters

Every load of laundry sends lint into the dryer vent. The lint trap catches most of it, but not all. Over time, lint builds up along the vent pipe, especially at bends and joints, until air can barely get through.

A clogged vent makes the dryer run longer and hotter. That wastes electricity, wears out the dryer, and creates a real fire risk, since lint is highly flammable. In Miami's humidity, lint also clumps into a heavier, damp buildup that clogs faster.

Signs your dryer vent is clogged

  • Clothes need more than one cycle to dry
  • The dryer or laundry room gets very hot
  • A burning smell when the dryer runs
  • Little or no airflow at the outside vent
  • Lint around the outside vent cap

We recommend cleaning the dryer vent at least once a year, and more often for large households or long vent runs. Read more in our guide: how often should you clean your dryer vent?
